                The Gluten Free Diet

A Gluten Free diet involves eliminating all foods that contain gluten - a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. For individuals with coeliac disease, or non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, removing gluten is essential for reducing symptoms, healing the gut, and preventing long-term health issues.

Coeliac disease affects around 1 in 100 people, but it's not the only reason someone might need to avoid gluten. Conditions like non-coeliac gluten sensitivity and other gluten-related disorders also require a gluten-free diet. It's estimated that at least 10% of people in the UK are following a gluten-free lifestyle—for medical or personal health reasons. The Gluten Free food industry is continually growing and worth an estimated £835 million per year.

Going Gluten Free isn't just about cutting out bread and pasta. It’s about learning to read labels, understand food sources, and balance your plate to avoid nutritional deficiencies that can arise from restrictive eating.

The term "gluten free" is protected under European Regulation (EU) No 828/2014, which is also upheld in UK law. To legally use this label on food products, the gluten content must be 20 parts per million (ppm) or less. Additionally, it's a legal requirement for food manufacturers to clearly label any of the 14 major allergens—including gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, rye, and oats—when they are used as bulking ingredients.

I believe that taking a whole food approach is the most effective and nourishing way to follow a gluten free diet. By focusing on minimally processed foods and avoiding synthetic ingredients, you give your body the best chance to heal and thrive.

As a Qualified Nutrition Coach with over 10 years of experience in Coeliac Disease and the Gluten Free lifestyle, I’m no stranger to the symptoms of being ‘glutened’ and the frustrating changes you are required to make when living with a restrictive diet.

Whilst navigating a Gluten Free Diet, the first 6-12 months can be the most challenging. The relapses (definitely in my case) that precede it, changing places that you once loved to eat, how and where you shop and reading EVERY label on EVERY food product, to name a few.

And then new unwanted symptoms rear their head after going gluten free - they’re fun right? An unbalanced Gut Microbiome or Gut Dysbiosis (leaky gut) sneaks in, potentially leading to other intolerances and nutritional deficiencies.

With my support, we can build a plan that is individual to you, enabling you to live gluten free confidently and with ease.

Testimonials

I started with Lorraine as someone who had some sense of knowledge around nutrition but was seeking more of a deep understanding of food and what it does to our bodies, not only for me but my toddler too. Lorraine worked hard putting together nutritional recommendations for myself and my toddler, personal to us based on our food and drink consumption and lifestyle. My main target issues were bloating and inflammation of my skin, I considered my diet fairly clean but knew that I must have been going wrong somewhere. Lorraine created a safe, judgement free space around the discussion of these issues and it was really refreshing to speak with someone who very clearly shows passion for what they do.

The information provided to me will stick with me and my toddler as we grow. I can now confidently say that have a deeper understanding of the foods that cause me issues and those that I consider safe, my skin is a huge reflection of this. The recipes provided by Lorraine are delicious too which is an obvious added bonus.

I highly recommend Lorraine to anyone who wishes to take the leap in making healthy life changes, you will not regret it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me.
